In this Unit of Inquiry, the students will learn how to make healthy, informed decisions in all areas of their life. We will study healthy decisions with: germs, hygiene, making/keeping friends, food choices, and more! Our summative assessment will be a project where the students present a way to stay healthy in one of the areas we studied. We hope they learn how to make healthy decisions all year, even after this Unit is finished!
2nd Unit of Inquiry: Where We are in Place and Time
"Make Your Mark"
In this Unit of Inquiry, the students will learn about many, many people who have influenced our world. We will read several biographies everyday and the students will understand how people can make a difference - whether it is for the better or worse. They will write a biography about one of their parents and a biography about a person in history of their choosing. By the end of this Unit of Inquiry, we hope the students understand that they ARE making a difference in the world - we just hope it's for the better! The focus of this Unit of Inquiry is on problem solving. All of the people we will study solved a problem in their community. Please email your child's teacher if your child becomes a problem solver at home because of what we're studying in class!
In this Unit of Inquiry, the students will learn about different types of weather and patterns in weather. They will choose one location around the world to track the weather for 5 weeks. Based on their data, they will make predictions about the weather in their assigned location. We will study patterns with the water cycle, moon phases, seasons, and more! We will work on our map and directional skills. Please email your child's teacher if they show any action at home that has to do with what we're learning in our weather studies!
During this Unit of Inquiry, the students will study many types of jobs. We will focus on how jobs have changed over time because of technology. We will visit flight museum to learn about the job of a pilot. We will also invite all of our parents to speak to 2nd grade about how YOUR job has changed over time because of technology. We will have more information about our "Career Week" soon! The students will choose one job to focus their studies on throughout this six weeks and they will present a project that explains how that job has changed over time because of technology. The students will become better researchers during this Unit of Inquiry!
During this Unit of Inquiry, the students will learn about different types of folk literature that have been passed down and have affected cultures in America, as well as the rest of the world. We will focus on tall tales, fables, and fairy tales. We will study the elements of each kind of story and look for similarities and differences in each of them. We will also work on making connections between this Unit of Inquiry and our first UOI Decisions, Decisions; the students will discover that there is that moment in each story when the character is allowed to decide which decision he/she will make; will it be a selfish decision, or a selfless decision? The students will finish this UOI by writing a class book of tall tales, fables, and fairy tales, which will be published by Student Treasures publishing! Parents: You will have ONE opportunity to purchase a copy of this special book! Be on the lookout in your child's folder for more information! Please email your child's teacher if your child shows any action at home that has to do with what we're learning in our folktale studies!
